Bitcoin turns 12: Curious video greetings from Hollywood

Today Bitcoin celebrates its 12th birthday. On the occasion of the festive day, nine US celebrities, including Charlie Sheen, Soulja Boy and David Hasselhoff, the most famous crypto currency, congratulate Bitcoin on its birthday. The world’s most famous lifeguard now climbs to new shores and reveals himself as a self-proclaimed Bitcoin creator.

Today, 12 years ago, the most famous crypto currency in the world was born: Bitcoin. On 31 October 2008, digital gold saw the light of day. This seems to please not only the crypto-community. Nine Hollywood celebrities, who were sponsored via the video sharing platform Cameo, congratulate Bitcoin via video message on the twelfth anniversary of the white paper’s publication. Among the celebrities are actor Charlie Sheen, radio presenter Charlemagne Tha God, RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan, animal rights activist Carole Baskin and David Hasselhoff. David Hasselhoff, who brought down the Berlin Wall with his singing skills and has been in the headlines again and again recently because of his alcohol-related escapades, also reveals himself to be the inventor of Bitcoin.

Crypto security company makes a joke

The videos were paid for by the crypto-security company Halborn, which serves customers such as Coinbase, IBM and AVA Labs. Rob Behnke, Halborn’s co-founder, explains that „cyber security can be a somewhat dry industry that takes itself too seriously“. Yet his employees play in bands and fool around when they’re not winning a hackathon or looking after their customers. So why not have a group of celebrities congratulate Bitcoin on its birthday? (The message of a celebrity costs between 50 and 2,500 US dollars).

Did „Da Hoff“ invent Bitcoin?

The videos show stars and starlets, including musicians and comedians from Hollywood who, admittedly, are not very familiar with digital currency. While US radio presenter Charlamagne Tha God asks whether the images he finds on Google under „Satoshi Nakamoto“ actually represent the Bitcoin creator, Two-and-a-Half-Men actor Charlie Sheen also admitted that he „doesn’t know very much about Bitcoin“. Nevertheless, he praised Satoshi Nakamoto for his innovation and the chance to invest in BTC. Above all, David Hasselhoff delivers a show-stopping film version of himself, leaning back and lolling in front of his swimming pool, and revealing himself as the self-proclaimed inventor Satoshi Nakamoto.

I would like to tell the world something […] Bitcoin was not invented by Satoshi Nakamoto. Bitcoin began with ‚Da Hoff‘. I, David Hasselhoff, invented Bitcoin, and I will keep what I know about Bitcoin a secret,

claims the actor. Many legends and mysteries surround Satoshi’s true identity. Therefore even David Haselhoff can claim to have invented the internet currency. His bold statement is of course met with considerable scepticism.

Bitcoin in retrospect

In any case, it is clear that 12 years ago today, a person or group under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto presented on the Bitcoin.org website the white paper they had developed, „Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System“. In the whitepaper, Nakamoto describes how a decentralised yet secure digital currency works. The eight-page whitepaper can be found here in PDF format.

It took Satoshi Nakamoto until January 2009 to create the first Genesis block of the Bitcoin Blockchain. With this he created the crypto currency Bitcoin. At the same time Nakamoto published the software of the crypto-currency as open source code. At that time Bitcoin 0.1 appeared and the first of the maximum 21 million possible BTCs were „dug“.

The first transaction in which BTC was exchanged for a real good took place on 22 May 2010. A day that has since been celebrated as Bitcoin Pizza Day. On that day, a seller agreed to exchange two pizzas for 10,000 BTC. Measured by today’s BTC value, the two pizzas thus cost 113 million euros.

Wu-Tang Clan expects Bitcoin revolution

Finally, the producer and rapper of the Wu-Tang Clan, RZA, says in the recording that he knows that the popular crypto currency was created by the anonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, who does his „Thang“. And he would like to add the following:

If you do not know, you should know better: At the end of the day scientists can create something, but the value of everything is what we put on it. The Bitcoin revolution has begun.
